Chapter 8: Jax

Jax had hoped the werewolves would become more accepting of the recent changes in the pack, but some seemed more disgruntled than ever. He knew the reason; Stone was the agitator in their midst, single-mindedly vying to become pack leader. Surely the others could see what a poor one he would make. But fear of change seemed to overcome common sense, clouding judgment and bringing the threat of something ominous ahead.

Jax had walked into the dining hall in time to hear Stone goading Leo about the omega, Sam. The big alpha couldn’t seem to have enough mates to please him. His most recent acquisition, the omega Justin, appeared big enough to be carrying twins again. If Stone continued to have sons, he would automatically rise in status within the pack, while River’s daughters could only work to bring his status down. It wasn’t certain the pack would even agree to let the girls stay, and if that happened, River and Josiah both would most certainly leave. Jax feared for their safety as well as the pack under Stone’s leadership. David had told Jax that Josiah’s friend Mark and his girlfriend Beth had offered to take the girls to raise. Jax had learned enough about pack dynamics over his time at the compound to be able to see that removing the children from the compound would go a long way in easing the minds of disgruntled pack members, but River and Josiah had declined the offer. That wasn’t surprising; who could possibly give up their own children? Every time Jax was around the twins, his thoughts went to one day having kids of his own. In the human world, he and David could adopt, but David would never want to live there.

The evening had only gotten more exciting after Stone’s declaration. Jax had shuddered with revulsion and shame for Sam when, in a show of dominance and intent to claim, Leo had taken the omega outside and pissed all over him. Although David had explained it wasn’t that uncommon a thing for an alpha to do when challenged over an omega and that it would only have made Sam feel safe and protected, watching Sam kneel at Leo’s feet and take hot piss to the face and all over his body had left Jax cold. Still, Jax had to admit the display had done its job; Stone had backed away, and Sam had gone home with Leo.

The whole thing had left Jax with a bad taste in his mouth, though. It was one more instance when the werewolves showed how animalistic they were, and Jax couldn’t help but be turned off by it.

As though these events hadn’t been enough, Josiah’s heat had been precipitated by all the testosterone hanging in the air. River had swept his mate home, leaving Sadie and Sophie in Jax and David’s care. Meanwhile, undoubtedly having had more than enough of werewolf drama, the humans had announced they were leaving. The two werewolves from Angel Hills had left soon after.
